Interview with Avinash Ummadisingu, Researcher at JAPAN AI

In April 2025, Avinash Ummadisingu joined JAPAN AI, bringing with him extensive experience in reinforcement learning, robotics, and computer vision. Now, he's exploring how large language models (LLMs) can be enhanced with greater flexibility and intelligence. In a field that changes almost daily, how does he stay ahead? We spoke with him about his mindset as a researcher and his aspirations for the team.

強化学習、ツール活用、そしてLLM研究の最前線へ

2025年4月にJAPAN AIへ加わったAvinash Ummadisinguさんは、強化学習、ロボティクス、コンピュータビジョンの領域で豊富な経験を持ち、現在は大規模言語モデル（LLM）をより柔軟かつ高度に活用するための研究に取り組んでいます。急速に変化するこの分野においてどう挑んでいるのか。研究者としての視点とチームへの想いを語っていただきました。

ーーPlease provide a brief self-introduction and your background.

I was first exposed to machine learning during my undergraduate studies, which led me to join the research division of a data science firm in India. There, I worked on a variety of research topics including machine learning, computer vision, and reinforcement learning. That experience deepened my interest in research and eventually led me to pursue a master’s degree, where I focused on data-efficient reinforcement learning.

After that, I moved to Japan to join Preferred Networks, where I spent five years working on reinforcement learning, robotics, 3D scene reconstruction, and more. Toward the end of my time there, I joined the post-training team for PLaMo—a Japanese LLM trained from scratch. I joined JAPAN AI this April and currently work as part of the research team, focusing on reinforcement learning for LLMs to enhance the JAI platform for business applications.

ーー簡単に自己紹介とこれまでのご経歴を教えてください。

大学時代に機械学習に初めて触れたことがきっかけで、インドのデータサイエンス企業の研究部門に参加しました。そこでは、機械学習、コンピュータビジョン、強化学習など、さまざまな分野に取り組みました。その経験から研究に対する関心が高まり、スイスのAI研究所IDSIAで、データ効率の良い強化学習をテーマに修士課程を修了しました。

その後、日本のPreferred Networksに入社し、5年間にわたり、強化学習、ロボティクス、3Dシーン再構成などに携わりました。最終的には、日本語LLM「PLaMo」のポストトレーニングを担当しました。今年の4月にJAPAN AIに入社し、現在はリサーチチームの一員として、LLMにおける強化学習の応用を通じて、JAIプラットフォームのビジネス活用を強化する取り組みを行っています。

ーーHave you ever received any awards or been recognized for your work in the past?

I haven't received any formal awards, but in my previous role as a researcher, part of my responsibility was to publish papers. Some of those papers were accepted at top-tier conferences, and we've also filed and received a few patents based on our work. So while not awards per se, those recognitions were meaningful in the research community.

ーーこれまでに成果が認められた経験はありますか？

以前の会社では研究成果を論文として発表することが業務の一部でした。いくつかの論文は主要な学会に採択され、特許もいくつか取得しています。公式な表彰ではありませんが、研究成果としては意味のある評価だったと思っています。

ーーWhat aspects of JAPAN AI resonated with you and led you to join the company?

I was drawn to JAPAN AI’s ability to identify strategic opportunities in the fast-changing LLM/VLM landscape and to build pragmatic solutions that genuinely address customer needs. My conversations with the team during the interview process reinforced this impression—their practical mindset and shared vision made it clear that this was the right next step for me.

急速に変化するLLM/VLM分野において、JAPAN AIが混沌とした状況の中でチャンスを見出し、現実的で効果的なソリューションを構築している点に惹かれました。面接でのチームとの会話でもその印象が強まり、実用性と未来へのビジョンを兼ね備えたこの会社でなら、自分の次のステップを踏み出せると確信しました。
